HOVERSPEED RUNS FASTEST SERVICE FOR BOULOGNE DAY TRIPPERS

23 June 2004

Taking just one hour to cross the Channel from Dover to Calais, Hoverspeeds Seacat service then includes a short coach trip to Boulogne where visitors can sight-see, enjoy Europes leading marine life centre Nausicaa, shop at a superb range of French boutiques and indulge in gourmet cuisine.

The service runs from July 2 September 30, 2004, with bookable prices from 14 return. For more details call 08705 240 241.

Before leaving the UK, day trippers can also take advantage of Hoverspeeds wines, beers and spirits pre-order, pre-pay service at Dover. Foot passengers can collect their orders on arrival back in the UK, after passport control. Hoverspeeds Calais-based store, open seven days a week, offers an extensive range of wines, beers, spirits, tobacco, fragrances, gifts and confectionary.

Boulogne, with its deep-rooted fishing tradition, offers many treasures. Main shopping streets are the Grand Rue, rue Thiers, rue Victor Hugo and rue Nationale. Shoppers will visit many speciality shops including one of the biggest cheese shops in France Philippe Olivier. Freshly caught fish is sold on the Quayside Boulevard Gambetta every day, and Wednesday and Saturday markets sell a vast range of local farmers produce.

Worth a visit is Le Chateau Musee Castle of the Courts of Boulogne built at the beginning of the 13th century. It is set in the Old Town next to the Cathedral and houses the largest collection of Greek and Etruscan vases after the Louvre.

Maison de la Beuriere in the heart of the old seafaring quarter of the town is an authentic fishermans house built in 1870 with the interior re-constructed to show how a sailors family lived in 1900. Boulogne also possesses the tallest column in France (54m) dedicated to Napoleons Grande Aremee.

There are many good restaurants including Michelin starred La Matelote (opposite Nausicaa), middle range Chez Jules in the towns main square, and the more most La Poivriere in the Old Town Haute Ville.
